Pee Wee Minor Finalists at Empire Cup Showdown

Pee Wee Minor Empire Cup Finalists

The Pee Wee Minor team had a successful weekend at the Empire State Showdown tournament coming away with the finalist banner! With only one loss in their last 10 league games the PW Minor Knights entered the tournament with a hot hand. They advanced to the finals undefeated (3-0-1) in a five team bracket against teams from Syracuse, Central Park (NYC), Pittsburgh, and Albany. The championship game showcased a rematch of the Knights vs Syracuse. In the first meeting, the Knights won handily with a 7-4 victory. The championship was intense with back and forth trading of goals and Syracuse was up by 1 with only a few minutes remaining. On the power play the Knights pulled the goalie and put forth a relentless 6 on 4 attack. Syracuse survived and the Knights lost a heartbreaker with the final score of 4 - 3.

Hats off to the PW Minor Knights for such a great showing against older teams in an open PW age bracket!

February 3, 2018  6:30pm-9:30pm
Kings Catering Party House
4031 Routes 5&20
This is an adult night out to enjoy locally produced wine, beer and food from local vendors at a great venue. There will be two new additions this year. A cornhole tounament and a photo booth. This event has increased rapidly in popularity through the last 5 years and is one of Canandaigua's best annual fundraisers. Tickets are $40 a person. There are basket raffles donated by our hockey families. 50/50 mega raffle for $100 with a chance to win up to $2000.
This fundraiser helps to pay for the CA Hockey teams very costly ice time throughout the season.
A very fun night to support our local athletes.

For tickets, contact any CA Hockey family.

Beginner Hockey (January-February)

Register now for our beginner hockey program for boys and girls ages 4-8 years old. This is a learn to skate program that will progress to basic stick handling and shooting skills. Registration is $75.  Our winter program will be held on Saturday mornings through February 24, 2018 (see times below).

8:00-8:50 a.m. - Returning skaters (children who have previously participated in our beginner program)

9:00-9:50 a.m. - New skaters (children with little to no skating experience)

See Register Online link on left hand side of page. Note: players must also register online with USA Hockey (USAhockeyregistration.com).

Equipment loaner program is available on a first come, first served basis ($75 refundable deposit required).

Common questions are listed below. Should you have any further questions, please contact .

Can my child participate with no/little skating experience?  Absolutely.  Children who participate in beginner hockey have varying levels of skating experience.

What equipment is required?   You must provide: skates and mouth guard. Other hockey equipment needed: helmet, chest protector, pants, shin guards, elbow pads and gloves.  These items are available for loan on a first come, first served basis and can be borrowed for a $75 refundable deposit due at time of pick-up. A jersey and hockey stick will be provided to all beginner skaters. Skaters should wear loose fitting pants to allow pants to cover shin guards.

Note: Skates rented at the rink need to be returned after each session, so the skates are available for other young skaters during the week.

Can my child use figure skates?  No, coaches ask that all beginners have hockey skates.  Bring your own or rent from the Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, while supplies last. For those planning to bring their own, new/used skates can be purchased for a nominal fee at various stores.

What skate size should my child get?  This depends on the brand.  Typically it is 1-2 sizes smaller than shoe size. Greater Canandaigua Civic Center staff can help with fitting on rentals and most retailers can offer fitting assistance. We recommend this before purchase.

Do skates need to be sharpened?  If you have purchased new/used skates for your child, they will need to be sharpened. This can be done at the rink for a nominal fee.

Can I go on ice with skatersWe welcome volunteers who have played hockey or can skate. Requirements to do so include: helmet, skates and completing the Meghan’s Law screening on-line (see link below).  There is a $25 fee for this screening. The certificate of completion must be handed to a Canandaigua Knights Board representative before you can get on ice.  NYSAHA/USA Hockey Background Screening (On-line) - Also known as Meghan's Law: www.commercialinvestigationsllc.com/vssnysaha

What is the $75 registration fee used for?  Canandaigua Knights Hockey is run by many volunteers.  The money collected is primarily used for the cost of the ice and equipment.

Other helpful tips:

  • Plan to arrive at least 25 minutes early to dress your child in the hockey equipment, unless they come to rink dressed, to ensure they get on the ice on time.

  • Loose fitting pants are recommended (sweats/PJ bottoms). You want pants to fit over shin guards. This makes it easier for skater to stand…plastic shin guards are very slippery on ice.

  • We recommend you take the equipment out of the bag to dry when you get home each week.

  • We’ve been asked where children can get additional ice time to improve their skating. The Greater Canandaigua Civic Center (gccc.org) offers open skate times to the public. See their website for details.
